• Youth Hockey Fall Programs

EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2024: Neck laceration protection is required for ALL youth players during practices and games. Purchasing a neck guard is the responsibility of each player/family and they will not be provided with rental equipment. 

The Missoula Area Youth Hockey Association (MAYHA) offers fall programs for players of all ages and abilities. Please read the description of each program and register your player accordingly. All registration is handled online through our DaySmart Recreation System and players must have a 2024-2025 USA Hockey number.

Dynamic Hockey Development Program

6-7 pm Thursdays off-ice training September 5th – October 10th

5:45-6:45 am Fridays on-ice training September 6th – October 11 (6 weeks)

The Dynamic Hockey Development Program is a comprehensive training regimen designed for players of all ability levels. The program focuses on enhancing fundamental hockey skills while integrating crucial injury-prevention strategies to ensure players remain healthy and perform at their best throughout the season.

In addition to one off-ice and one on-ice session per week, this program includes an individualized 1-on-1 stretching and mobility session with Val Moody. Val brings over 25 years of experience as a licensed athletic trainer, focusing much of her career on sports safety, injury prevention, and concussion management in youth athletes. She has been a part of the Glacier Ice Rink community since 2014.

Coach Ted Moody will lead the on-ice portion of this program. Ted grew up playing hockey starting at the age of 5. Throughout his hockey career, he played on various state hockey teams in Colorado. Ted brings over 45 years of experience and knowledge to the ice and enjoys helping players learn and love the game of hockey. Ted is heading into his 9 th year as a coach at Glacier Ice Rink, working with hockey players of all ages and abilities.

Termite/Mite

4:15-5:15 pm, Wednesdays, September 11 – October 23, 2024 (7 weeks)

Players ages 5-8 (birth years 2019-2016) will participate in various fun drills and games aimed at improving forward and backward skating, stick handling, passing, and shooting. The program is based on USA Hockey’s American Development Model, with long-time Coach John O’Bannon leading the sessions.

We recommend that new players complete at least one Learn to Play Hockey session before entering the house league. Players should be able to perform most of Learn to Skate USA’s Hockey 1 and 2 skills.

Fall House Hockey (10U/12U/14U)

5:30-6:30 pm, Wednesdays, October 2-23, 2024 (4 weeks)

House players ages 9-14 (birth years 2015-2010) will get ready for the winter season during this four-week session. Players share the ice for a combined American Development Model practice that includes station drills and small area games.

We recommend that new players complete at least one Learn to Play Hockey session before entering the house league. Players should be able to perform most of Learn to Skate USA’s Hockey 1 and 2 skills.

Checking and Competitive Contact Clinic

Mondays, September 30 – October 21, 2024 (4 weeks)

Group 1 – Second Year Mite + Squirts (birth years 2016, 2015, 2014): 4:15-5:15 pm

Group 2 – Peewee (birth years 2012 and 2013): 5:30-6:30 pm

Group 3 – Bantam/High School (birth years 2011-2006): 6:45-7:45 pm

Competitive contact and body checking are key parts of a fast and exhilarating game. Players who wish to play at the top of their game must understand how to give and receive checks safely. This clinic will focus on developing key skills including angling, positioning, technique, and awareness.

It is important that players of all ages learn the basics of angling and positioning so they are ready for more physical play as they enter age levels where checking is legal. Younger age levels are encouraged to attend these clinics to ensure they have a solid foundation of competitive contact skills that will prepare them for the next level.

Cost: Skaters – $108; Goalies – FREE (limit of four)

George Wolff Power Skating and Stick Skills Clinic

Proper skating mechanics are crucial for hockey players. This camp focuses on skating, stickhandling, shooting, and passing.

Powerskating areas of focus; Proper skating mechanics, forward and backward striding, efficiency, edge control, crossovers, power turns, transitioning with mohawks and pivots, quick starts and stops.

Stick skills areas of focus; Shooting mechanics – ability to shoot off either foot forehand and shooting backhand with power, Passing – forehand and backhand including saucer pass, Stickhandling and advanced stickhandling including deeks.

Bantam and High School Fall Hockey

Sundays, September 8-October 27, 2024 (8 weeks)

4:45, 6:00, and 7:15 pm start times

Middle school and high school players (birth years 2011-2006) play weekly games every Sunday evening. Checking is not allowed in the fall program, which allows younger players to improve their skills against more experienced players. Bench coaches are volunteers who will keep the focus on fun.

Cost: Skaters – $216; Goalies – $106

Registration

Players will need a 2024-2025 USA Hockey number to register for fall programs. This is done at an additional cost directly through USA Hockey, and please make sure to register your player using their FULL legal name as it appears on their birth certificate. Legal names are required by the registrar and all players must provide a birth certificate if they have not submitted one in a prior season. If your family needs assistance covering the USA Hockey membership fee, you may apply for a USA Hockey Membership Relief Fund Grant.

Register online through our DaySmart Recreation System. Use the links above to register directly for each program. When registering, make sure to have your player’s name selected from the dropdown menu. Daysmart will only show programs your player is age-eligible for.

Additional Information

Communication

We primarily communicate through email. Unsubscribing from emails in the DaySmart system may cause you to miss program information and reminders. For SMS reminders, including weather closures, please provide your cell phone number and mobile carrier so you can receive text messages.

Unless you unsubscribe, we will add your email to our monthly Glacier Ice Rink email newsletter, which includes general announcements and events. You can unsubscribe from this newsletter and still receive youth hockey information.

Financial Assistance

Financial aid is available for families needing help with registration fees. To apply, complete a Financial Assistance Application and return it via email or mail before the registration deadline or program start date. Financial aid covers up to 2/3 of the registration fee but does not cover the volunteer obligation amount. Players should still register before the deadline and select the payment plan option. If awarded, the financial aid will be applied to the remaining balance.

Equipment Rental

Rental equipment appointments for the 2024-2025 season will be available starting in late August.

Rental equipment is available for $75 per player for the season. Equipment rental is staffed by volunteers and is available through appointment only. Families with multiple players should make one appointment per player to allow adequate time for fittings.

Athletic Training Services

The University of Montana provides athletic training services to the University of Montana men’s hockey team and MAYHA participants. These services include the prevention, examination, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries and medical conditions. Concussion baseline and follow-up testing are also available for all league participants. All services are provided at the rink at no charge and are available by appointment.
