Dykes on Ice screening – Oct. 4
Celebrate National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11) and the LGBTQ+ community with an exciting night of fun, camp, and ice!
6 pm – Missoula Premiere of Dykes on Ice. This 1997 mockumentary chronicles the quest of two lesbians who are training for the bronze at the 1998 Gay Games.
$5 for admission, waived for anyone who dresses as their Favorite Olympic Skater or who purchased a copy of the video last spring during Missoula Gives.
This film won many awards at film festivals around the world, including San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Vancouver, Berlin, and Sydney. A film class at a German University features it as an example of Queer American Cinema from the 1990s.
The film stars local resident and WHAM president Kari Hong who trained before she could skate. The reviews of the film are remarkable, which include:
* “This is the best film I have ever seen.” Carol Hong (Kari’s mother)
* “Wow. I’m speechless. I cannot tell if Kari is worse at skating or acting. But sure, it’s worth 5 bucks.” Garry Swain, NHL Legend Himself
* “It’s fascinating to realize that I’ve been playing hockey with someone for years, and it turns out she’s a super talented mockumentary maker. World class. So much ahead of her time.” Zsuzsa Weinhandl
6:30 pm – Panel discussion with Dyke on Ice Kari Hong and Director and Producer Petra Janopaul. Petra has an MFA in film, has a resume involving much more serious cinema, and is flying in from San Francisco to take questions on how to make films.
7-8:30 pm – Public skating session featuring dance music from the 90s. Admission is $9 and rental skates are $3. Anyone who dresses as their Favorite Olympic skater gets in free!
In addition, you can be a part of next year’s mockumentary, tentatively titled “Only Murders in the Glacier Ice Rink: Part 1.” For donations of $50, you can be an extra in the film, or for $250 (made by individuals or by a group), you can film a scene “murdering” Glacier Ice Rink’s Executive Director Laura Henning.
The film screening and panel discussion will be held in the Culinary building directly across the parking lot from the rink.
